Urban Utopia: Art and Culture to deform the frame of our possibilitiessurvival-kit-6-poster-mix

For the second time, Urban Institute will have the opportunity to welcome and cure a three days symposium for the sixth edition of the contemporary art festival, Survival Kit.

The context of a global crisis, and of course urban ones bring us to discuss the great failure of dominants ideology and at the same time to understand the necessity to think outside the usual frame, to be creative and invent new solutions.

Establishments support dominant ideologies, which in return ignore the existence of alternative options - the alternative remains apparently too often insignificant.
However, each territory ‘knows’ the existence of interspace, fault or niche. A topos respecting the existence of alterity, a space where rules and norms disappear or change, where a city’s reality is transcended by illusion and dreams, a world proposing and fostering alternative ideologies, social and cultural experiments, a society that creates awareness about its subcultures, supports its heterogeneous, manifold, heterotopian existence.

The symposium will gather international and local actors, such as philosophers, artists, social designers, architects, planners, historians and urban activists to embrace the complexity of urbanity and bring more light in the jungle of Utopia, Topos, Heterotopia, Dystopia...

The diversity of initiatives and interest of our lecturers will propose a multiple of singular vision that can reflect possibilities to Riga's development on different aspect as community (re)generation for our neighborhood or the use and sense we can give to our public space.

We are looking for engaged urban diving and workshop, observing and being inspire by some of our special place: Liksnas 26, Brasalona, Riga's central market, Lucavsala, Prokova cemetery and probably others places ...

One of our lecturer, Jekatarina Lavrinec from Vilnius Gediminas Technical University will proposed an involving workshop regarding micro-urbanism with the construction of a street Komoda in order to develop spaces for sharing and imagination. (Laimikis.lt)

You are all welcome to join our debate to discover, be inspire and inspiriting.
